Nature of Alonnisos Island

The Raven

Alonnisos: The Raven
Walking quietly in the mountains of Alonissos, the hiker will definitely have the opportunity to hear a hoarse call from somewhere indeterminately high. The Raven is the largest of the corvidae, almost twice the size of the Hooded crow. Unlike the Hooded crow, which is a common inhabitant of the countryside and farmlands, where can be usually seen in small groups, the Raven always flies in pairs along the bare mountain tops and ridges and does not approach human facilities.
This pitch-black bird, the main character of many fairy tales and folklore stories, where sometimes is considered be wise and in others is believed to be naive, is a skilled predator of all ground level food opportunities, with a particular preference for dead animals that it tears apart with its solid beak. It is particularly long-lived - it lives up to 20 years - and lifelong faithful to its mate.
Originally dedicated to Apollo, after the end of antiquity the Raven took over the nutrition of the Prophet Elias. It was the first animal that Noah sent after the Flood to see what was happening in the World: the voracious Raven, however, dove into food and forgot to come back.
Present throughout the Palearctic, the Raven is considered in most Old World cultures to be a bad omen.
