Kernitsas monastery
The monasteries of Mt Menalon
Kernitsas monastery
The monastery of Panagia Kernitsa is built on a prominent rocky outcrop. The date of its foundation is not known: other sources mention the 12th century, and others the end of the 14th century.

Local tradition says the monastery was founded by the brothers Dimos, Theofilos and Synodinos of Pertzokoleas family in 1116. The name of the monastery comes from the place name of the medieval settlement Kernitsa, which was located in the vague reliefs below the Argyrokastro castle, to the east of Magouliana.
The monastery can be visited. Until 1940 the monastery was run under a male community, while since then it is a nunnery. The monastery of Agii Theodori, near Methydrion and the Sfyrida hermitage, are today depedencies of the Kernitsa monastery.
