The flora of the Ionian islands have been under study even form the 18th c., as there had been ease for the – mostly Europeans – researchers to move without limitations, a condition much less applicable in continental Greece.
By gathering the available data from the numerous individual botanical collections and works, it is estimated that flora of Zakynthos includes around 950 taxa (species and subspecies). Prevailing plant families are Grasses (Graminae), Daisies (Compositae and Legumes (Leguminosae), that is, families hosting numerous synanthropic species (growing in man-made or disturbed habitats), a fact that is consistent with the intense use of space on the island.
Thanks, however, to the particularly extended steep rocky western coast, Zakynthos hosts in this zone 5 narrow endemic plants: the woodruff Asperula naufraga, the micromeria Micromeria browiczii and the sea lavenders Limonium korakonisicum, Limonium zacynthium and Limonium phitosianum.
