Skyros geosites

On the northeastern coast of Skyros, coastal porous calcareous-psammitic formations (travertines, or locally ‘pouria’) appear in places. As these formations are relatively easy to cut, they were ideal building materials, mainly for the construction of the rectangular cornerstones of the skyrian houses. Indeed, the traces of cutting rectangular blocks from these rocks is evident to the visitor of the quarry sites.

The most impressive formations are found in the area of Gyrismata - Pouria, where there was an extensive ancient quarry, the remnants of which create an impressive scenery
