Flora of Milos
Flora of Milos
Identify plants species

Rather few researchers have dealt with the flora of Milos. From the published papers it appears that the flora includes about 850 species, with most being widely distributed - fewer than 50 taxa (species and subspecies) are Greek endemics.

Long-standing human activity and the often large scale effects (mainly mining) are considered to have played a role in shaping the island's floral image. Τhe visitor of the island, of course, has the chance to admire an extraordinary colorful canvas of shrubs and wildflowers.

Among the Greek endemic plants, it is worth mentioning the wild onion Alllium pilosum, the knapweeds Centaurea laconica subsp. lineariloba and Centaurea raphanina, the orchids Anacamptis coriophora, Serapias orientalis, Serapias parviflora, Anacamptis papilionaceaea, the beautiful species Nepeta melissifolia, Nigella degenii, Dianthus diffusus, Silene cythnia and others.

In addition to the Greek endemics, characteristic and/or other important plant species of Milos are the coastal juniper Juniperus macrocarpa, the white rockrose Cistus salvifolius, the spiny broom Calicotome villosa, the heath Erica manipuliflora, the rock samphire Crithmum maritimum, the sea lily Pancratium maritimum and others.
