Monasteries of Serifos

There are 2 monasteries in Serifos, the monastery of Evangelistria Akrotiriani in the southwest part of the island and the monastery of Taxiarches in the north.

The monastery of Taxiarches is located near the village of Galani. The monastery was built in 1572, during a period of great turmoil in the Aegean, and its high fortress and entrance, reminiscent of a castle gate rather than a monastery, offered an important shelter for the region.
The katholikon is a fairly large domed church with three apses, dedicated to the archangels Michael and Gabriel, considered as the patron saints of the island. Remarkable frescoes and pictures are kept inside the church, while the monastery preserves also old manuscripts and utensils.
The monastery of Taxiarches hosts today an active monks community.

The monastery of Evagelistria Akrotiriani is found a desolate location on Kavos Cyclops. The monastery is fairly recent and was founded near the old church of Agios Ioanis.
Nowadays, the monastery is served by a single nun.
