Fauna of Zagori area

The most important mammal species in the Zagori area are the Brown bear and the wolf. Wild boars (Sus scrofa) are abundant, while Roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) is scarce. In the forest clearings one could see a Wild cat (Felis sylvestris), while along the riverbanks it is easy to identify the traces of the Otter (Lutra lutra) and in the aplne zone it is quit easy to spot small groups of Chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra balcanica).

There are also mountain hares (Lepus europaeus), foxes (Vulpes vulpes), badgers (Meles meles), martens (Martes foina), pine martens (Martes martes), squirrels (Sciurus vulgaris), as well as more common small mammals such as the Etruscan shrew (Suncus etruscus), the Bicolored shrew (Crocidura leucodon) and the Mole (Talpa caeca).

Thirty species of reptiles have been recorded in the Zagori area: 16 species of lizards, 10 species of snakes and 4 species of turtles. Most probable species to encounter are the Salamander (Salamandra salamandra) after a good rain in the forest, the Yellow-bellied Toad (Bombina variegata) in every location with stagnant or slow-running water, and the alpine Newt (Ichthyosaura alpestris) in Drakolimni and many ponds and troughs in elevations higher than 1000m.
