Parnitha topoguide: MTB on Mt Parnitha

Mt. Parnitha attracted cyclists before WWII, and especially after the construction of the road from Metochi to Sanatorium Xenia). The first cycling event was the Parnitha Ascent that began back in 1938. The Parnitha Ascent became an important event of the Greek Cycling Calendar.

In recent years, several hiking paths have been adopted by friends of the MTB genre called Downhill, which focuses exclusively on the descent of steep and technically difficult routes. In Mt. Parnitha, the predilection field of Downhill funs is its steep southern face. Downhill is practiced mainly along paths around Metochi, but also in longer descents from the peaks Aeras and Kira to Metochi (the ascent is often replaced with the transport of bicycles on a vehicle). These trails are equipped with jumps and bumps, and some are used for racing events. The most spectacular is the descent that combines the upper part of Yellow Square trail (Metochi col of Skala-Aghia Triada) with a direct outcome towards the flat area between Metochi and Melia.
