Monasteries of Santorini

Monasteries of Santorini

Few monasteries or monastic communities were built on Santorini island, and most of them were founded by Catholic congregations, such as the Jesuits, the Lazarists, the Sisters of Mercy and the Dominicans. The two major orthodox monasteries were the monastery of Profitis Ilias at Pyrgos and the women's monastery of Aghios Nikolaos in Imerovigli.

All Catholic monasteries were abandoned after the great earthquake of 1956, except for the monastery of Dominikan nuns in Firostefani.
