The churches that the hiker come across along the Menalon Trail belong to two large groups, the churches of the villages and the rural chapels.
The former are large, often three-aisled, basilicas, with conspicuous masonry and rich interior decoration: they are the poles of the small mountain communities and at the same time the symbols of the current prosperity of the village. The number of large churches in a settlement indicates the demographic and economic rigor of different social clusters - often large families - claiming their own parish.
Among the churches of some settlements, such as Dimitsana, one can find some Late Byzantine churches, of particular architectural interest.

Rural chapels are either landmarks - like mountain beacons in the sea of ridges and ravines- or centers of old farming communities. Most are single-aisled, rectangular buildings, with a pitched roof and minimal interior decoration.
